“Just My Luck”: the winning ticket from the Lille Institute for Photography

Belgians Cécile Hupin and Katherine Longly are dedicating an exhibition in Lille to the funny, happy, and sometimes painful stories surrounding gambling, bingo, and other lotteries.
“Just My Luck” is the result of six years of work. (Cécile Hupin & Katherine Longly)

The lottery doesn't always pay off immediately... We suspected it a little, and this is what the small exhibition by Cécile Hupin and Katherine Longly shows, with humor and empathy. While waiting for work to be done, the Lille Institute for Photography, closed since December 2023, is occupying the Théâtre du Nord, for a very engaging off-site tour about lottery, scratch cards, Bingo, Euromillions and other draw games. Fascinated by this trade in luck, Hupin and Longly spent six years collecting painful and comical stories about the issue, tales of winners, losers (mostly losers in fact), memories of "almost winners", anecdotes of balls stuck in machines, groups of friends who pull each other's legs, lies and lives that turn upside down... " We love news stories, we exchange a lot of articles on the lottery in the form of "what happened to them ?" It's known and people now come to us with their stories ", say the two Belgian artists.

Formally, there are few photographs in the course, mostly texts to be read in the form of four
